Bonding calcium and chlorine

The atomic weight for calcium is 20. It has two electrons in its first shell, eight in its second, and eight in its third. This leaves 2 electrons for the outer shell.

The atomic weight of calcium is 17. Two electrons are in the first shell, eight in the second and seven in the third.

Calcium needs to lose two electrons to complete its outer shell and chlorine needs to gain one.
