Proper Microscope Care

Your instructor will show you how to USE a microscope to perform Laboratory Exercises

This page is to instruct you in proper Care and Handling of the Microscope.

Diagram of a typical microscope    (click on Image for a LARGER version)

 BEFORE YOU USE THE MICROSCOPE:

- When carrying the microscope you should use TWO HANDS

Grab the scope by the ARM and under the BASE
        - Be mindful of the eyepiece and stage as you remove the scope from the shelves.
       - Make certain the power cord is in good condition before use

WHILE YOU USE THE MICROSCOPE:

- PAY ATTENTION to how close the objective lens is to the slide,

It recommended to turn the nose piece to the lowest power objective while loading a slide.

Avoid any contact between the objective and the slide
        - Use Immersion Oil - ONLY on objectives that specify they are to be used with oil
       - Use items designed and manufactured for use on a microscope please.

e.g. Do not use KIMWIPES on the lenses

 AFTER YOU USE THE MICROSCOPE:

- If oil was used be sure the objective is cleaned:
                ONLY USE
Lens Cleaner and Lens Paper to clean the objective and the slide

        - Make certain the lowest power objective is in place
        - Make certain the stage is lowered to the lowest point

With some microscopes the objectives are moved up and down, so make sure these are in their lowest position
        - Make certain the stage is clean and slides are removed.
        - Secure the power cord around the base so it doesn't hang down creating a trip hazard.

     - If a dust cover is available use it.
