Course Name and Title: Intro to Networking CSC 230

I. Course Description:

In this course students will learn the introductory concepts of computer networks. Topics include network functions, standards, local area networks, wide area networks, protocols, topologies and operating systems. The course is equally divided between classroom discussion and hands-on activities. Students will install, configure and test an Ethernet LAN during the semester. This course is designed to cover approximately half of the objectives for CompTIA's Network+ certification exam.

CSC121 Fundamental Concepts of Computing and CSC102 Intro to Microcomputer Applications

The course will be taught by a combination of instructor led discussions, audio-visual materials, class participation, and hands-on lab training and exercises.

VIII. Evaluation, Grading, and Makeup Policy:

Students will be evaluated by  1 WebQuest, 8 Assignments, 8 Quizzes and a Final Exam during the semester. Makeup quizzes may be given with a valid written excuse. Everything shall be graded on a scale of 0 - 100.

Final grade point distribution is as follows:

Percentages for the final grade will be rounded to the nearest whole point, and a letter grade will be assigned. The grading scale is as follows:

95 - 100=A, 90 - 94=A-

86 - 89=B+, 83 - 85=B, 80 - 82=B-

76-79=C+, 73 - 75=C, 70-72=C-

65 - 69=D+, 60 - 64=D, 0 - 59=F

XI. Emergency procedures:

School cancellations due to inclement weather will be announced on local radio stations as listed in the CCC student handbook. Class cancellations due to instructor absence will be posted on the class web site, placed on my telephone answering service and posted on the classroom door. Room changes will be announced in advance whenever possible and posted on the classroom door.
