Conductivity Probe

Introduction

The conductivity probe can be used to determine the concentration of ions in a sample. It  cannot tell which specific ions are present.

The probe functions by measuring the conductivity of a solution. The probe contains two electrodes. When inserted into a solution, the flow of electric current from one probe to the other can be measured. In a solution, electricity is conducted by ion transport, so the more ions present in the solution, the greater the capacity to conduct a current.

Setup and Calibration

The conductivity probe is connected to a small box with a toggle switch at the end. Set this switch to 0-2000.

Connect the conductivity probe to the channel 1 port on the side of the Vernier interface box.

Place the tip of the probe in distilled water.

Start Logger Pro by double-clicking the icon (if available) or clicking Programs - Vernier Software - Logger Pro.

The meter is on the bottom left side of the screen. It displays conductivity values in units called microsiemens (uS).
